The models taking part were all vastly different, but all based on the simple original principle - a cushion of air. It's a principle the British claim to have invented, so hovercraft building has really caught on with the British do-it-yourself men.
The winning machine in the race cost about three hundred pounds (720 U.S. dollars) to build.
SYNOPSIS: On the Thames in London on Sunday, amateur hovercraft builders attempted to prove their skills in a race. The British claim to have invented the hovercraft principle-a cushion of air on which the craft can cover land or sea - and one attraction of it is that the enthusiastic amateur can easily build his own machine. There were twenty models entered: all vastly different, whether tiny and open to the elements, or large with sophisticated - looking wheelhouse. In Britain even groups of schoolboys have succeeded in building quite efficient hovercraft.
Not all the amateur craft were trouble-free however on Sunday - some faced an early let-down, when heats proved too taxing. Five were left for the final, between Fulham and Battersea in South London.
As well as a test of durability, it was as test of manoeuvring skill with some of the craft showing extraordinary capabilities. The owner of the fastest home-made hovercraft over five laps gave a victory turn in a machine he made for about three hundred pounds (720 U.S. dollars).
