Background: THE EJECTOR SEAT HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY FACTORS IN MODERN AIR HISTORY. IN FACT THE BRITISH MARTIN-BAKER AIRCRAFT COMPANY, WHOSE EJECTOR SEAT HAS NOW SAVED A THOUSAND LIVE, WERE GIVEN THE BRITISH ROYAL AERO CLUB'S 1964 GOLD MEDAL FOR "THE GREATEST SINGLE CONTRIBUTION TO AVIATION SAFETY IN RECENT YEARS."
THE MARTIN-BAKER EJECTOR SEAT IS NOW IN SERVICE WITH THE AIR FORCES OF SOME 36 NATIONS AND IS CALCULATED TO SAVE AT LEAST THREE LIVES EVERY WEEK. THE CHIEF DESIGNER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE MARTIN-BAKER COMPANY IS SIR JAMES MARTIN. RECENTLY SIR JAMES WAS ASKED HOW HE FELT NOW HIS INVENTION HAS SAVED A THOUSAND LIVES....
THE FIRST LIVE TEST EJECTION WAS MADE BACK IN 1946, AND THE FIRST EMERGENCY ESCAPE WAS MADE THREE YEARS LATER. SUBSEQUENT DEVELOPMENTS MADE THE MARTIN-BAKER SEAT THE FIRST THAT COULD BE EJECTED SAFELY AT GROUND LEVEL AND THE FIRST THAT COULD BE USED STATICALLY ON THE GROUND.
