Background: A crowd of over a thousand, mostly young people, took part in this year's May Day celebrations in Phnom Penh's Olympic Stadium on Tuesday (1 May).
The President of the Khmer Republic, Lon Nol, made a brief appearance and addressed the rally.
While the celebrations were going on, United States B-52 bombers were bombing the east bank of the Mekong River, opposite Phnom Penh. Latest military reports indicated that Communist forces were closing in towards the Mekong from the east, while further to the south, heavy fighting was reported.
