"TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 5): President Kaunda: This revolution is coming. The only question to ask is, is it going to be allowed to come about without much upheaval, without much bloodshed, or the other way around? This I think is a question that matters today, and all our efforts that make for goodwill, make people understand what is happening today, are designed in out opinion to lessen this bloodshed. I have said before we have been here under the British for over 70 years. We never became capitalists. Never. We have remained humanists, even when we are discriminated against, oppressed, killed, shot at like wild animals. We have been humiliated. I remember distinctly in '58, at the height of the Federation..... (indistinct). We came out with the constitution of the party, which was humanistic. Who is Vorster to tell us today that because our Chinese brothers are building that railway for us, we are going to go Communist. What an idiot. (Cries of shame). We respect the thinking of the Chinese peoples. We respect it. They are our friends. They are doing a lot for us. They have assured us that they are here to build a railway. They are building these roads in Zambia. At no time have I heard of a Chinese man interfering with our politics. No, never. (shouts and applause).

Background: President Kenneth Kaunda came to the defence of Chinese technicians currently working in Zambia. In an emotional Lusaka speech on Friday (June 25), the President bitterly counter-attacked South African Prime Minister John Vorster for suggesting there were political reasons for the Chines presence in Zambia.

President Kaunda, speaking at a reception on his return from the Organisation of African unity summit in Addis Ababa, declared it was idiotic to suppose that Zambia is going communist because Chinese engineers are helping to build the Uhuru railway -- from Tanzania to the Zambian copperbelt.

But the President started by warning that there would be bloodshed in Africa unless there was an end to racialism on the continent.
