Background: One hundred priest were ordained today by the visiting Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church Pope John Paul the second in Kaduna. The ceremony which was performed during a high Papal mass at the Murtala Square in the state capital drew an estimated crowd of about one million people.
Earlier on arrival, the Pope was met by a large cheering crowd who surged into the open space through which the vehicle carrying the Pope and Archbishop Peter Jatan were being driven. More than five thousand security men found it difficult to control the jubilant crowd which comprised both foreigners and Nigerians as well as Polish nationals. Our correspondents reported that people had started trooping into the square as early as four O'clock in the morning and that two hours before the Pope's arrival, there was no more sitting space in the grand stand. Besides the ordination ceremony at the High Mass, the Pope also addressed the national laity council leaders, Catechists and the Catholic Women's Organisation leaders. Pope John Paul also held a meeting with Muslim Religious leaders. He is expected to conduct a papal mass and address university men, intellectuals, Scientists and Artists when he visits Ibadan tomorrow on the last leg of his visits to the states. The Pope leaves Nigeria on Wednesday.
