REPORTER: Can you tell us when you got the news from Senator McGovern.



SHRIVER: By telephone. I was up at Cape Cod, a house up there at Hyannisport and on Thursday afternoon he called me and told me that he had already offered the opportunity to Senator Ed Muskie....he wasn't certain how Senator Muskie would decide. Obviously he hoped Senator Muskie would give it his most serious consideration, which I'm sure Senator Muskie did...and he said it's kind a funny to be discussing this with you because I don't know whether I'll ever be talking to you about it but I want you to know that regardless of whether you are the candidate I want you to be very active in the campaign. He expressed his appreciation for what I'd done for the party in the past and the work that I'd done in the government. He asked me whether I was still interested or whether I would be interested if it was proposed me. The answer was yes.



REPORTER: Can you tell me what happened on Saturday when he called you back. (indiotinet)...when he called you back on Saturday?



SHRIVER: He called back on Saturday about 11.30 or 12 o'clock and told me that Senator Muskie, had personal reasons, compelling important reasons why he shouldn't do it, and he wanted to find out if I would. And I said I certainly would.

Background: The new Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate, Sargent Shriver, yesterday (Sunday) met Senator George McGovern's campaign aides at his luxurious home in Rockville, Maryland. During a luncheon break he spoke to reporters about his selection.

Robert Sargent Shriver was born in November 1915 at Westminster, Maryland. The son of a banker, he was educated at Yale and graduated as a lawyer. He practised law and worked as a journalist. He saw service in the US Navy during the war and in 1946 joined the staff of the late Joseph P. Kennedy, millionaire patriarch of the Kennedy family. In 1935 he married Eunice Kennedy. They have five children. In 1960, Mr. Shriver became the late John kennedy's campaign manager and, upon his brother-in-law's election, was appointed head of the newly created Peace Corps. In 1968 he was appointed ambassador to France by President Johnson and remained in that post a year after President Nixon was elected. His choice as Senator McGovern's running mate came after a week of disarray in the Democratic Party, caused by the controversy over the past health of first choice, Senator Thomas Eagleton.
