Background: Australian Jack Brabham, reigning world champion, won the Belgian Grand Prix at Francorchamps, Belgium June 19. His average speed: 133.63 mph - one of the fastest on may road circuit in the history of motor racing.

But with record speed came tragedy - two British drivers Chris Bristow 22, and Alan Stacey, 26, died in crashes. During practice the previous day two other British drivers received injuries - Stirling Moss, 30, and Michael Taylor, 25 - Moss suffered a broken nose and back, both legs broken, and tow ribs cracked when his car left the track.

Only six of the Grand Prix race starters finished. All first three places went to Cooper drivers - Brabham leading all the way, Bruce McLaren, New Zealand, second and Oliver Gendebien, Belgium, third at one lap behind.

Fourth was Phil Hill, U.S. in a Ferrari, at one lap, fifth Jim Clark, Britain, in a Lotus, at two laps, and sixth L.Bianchi, Belgium, in a cooper at eight laps.

The Francorchamps circuit - the race is over 314.71 miles - was known before World War Two as killer, but since then the whole track was widened and resurfaced with non-skid asphalt while the most treacherous hairpin turns were straightened or eliminated.
