Background: Within a fortnight of the tragic crash at Sao Paulo, where 45 were killed, and while this sad episode was still in people's minds all over the country, two more train accidents caused the death of another 7 people, with over 50 wounded.
The first one, still on unlucky CENTRAL DO BRAZIL, near Rio, occurred early in the morning, when a loaded passenger train headed for Rio collided with a freighter train, by error travelling on the same track.: 5 people were killed and over 15 wounded. Fortunately, the first car in the composition was empty, due to a failure in the lighting system. The car was in the dark, and passengers had avoided it because of this. This car was almost completely smashed, and had it been carrying passengers, the toll of the dead would have been much greater.
A few hours later, a LEOPOLDINA RAILWAY train, still near Rio, caused the death of two more, injured another 30 or 40 people. The train, entering a deviation track, proceeded at full speed as one of the trucks went to pieces, causing the falling over of two passenger loaded cars. Considering the tremendous confusion that resulted, the fact that only two people were killed is really a very fortunate one.
