Background: President de Gaulle began his 5-day, 1100-mile tour of Britanny, Sept 7, with a visit to the port of Brest and the island of Sein.

After inspecting the aircraft-carrier "Clemenceau" he flew in a helicopter to Sein, whose entire able-bodied population set sail for Britain in 1940 after hearing his radio appeal from London for continued French resistance. Islanders in picturesque costume and flowing black ribbons pressed around to see their war-time hero place a wreath, and deliver an address.
