IMPERIALE: "I called this press conference because what happened here today was a disgrace. And I want it clearly understood that the violence that was started here today was not with any onlooker or picketer. It started when a police officer was assaulted by one of the Jones men. We have testimony and witnesses who witnessed the entire situations. Naturally from the struggle that started wit the policeman, a lost of the onlookers were there, ran there, to see what was happening."

Background: Controversy over construction of a Black-Nationalist sponsored apartment house in a predominantly white area of Newark, New Jersey, erupted into violence on Thursday when two dozen white pickets and six Negro workers fought each other.

Ninety policemen were involved in the fracas - two receiving minor injuries. One version was that police arrived to break up the brawl after it began. But a Newark councillor, Anthony Imperiale, claimed Negro workers started the fight when they assaulted a policeman.

The progress of the 2.4 million pound sterling (US 6 million dollar) project had been stopped for three months by demonstrations and court orders, and work had resumed on the building the day before the brawl broke out.

SYNOPSIS: In the American city of Newark, New Jersey, fights broke out between Negro workers and white pickets on Thursday. The Negroes were working on a new apartment block being built in the middle of a predominantly white area.

The brawl broke out, according to some reports, when two dozen whites attacked six workers. The whites were picketing the site in an attempt to halt construction-work. The reports say that some ninety policemen moved in to separated the rival factions.

The apartments were designed for Negroes by Black Nationalists, and white people saw the siting of the building in this racially sensitive area as deliberate provocation. Newark Councillor Anthony Imperial later gave the white pickets' version of the incident.

Anti-Negro demonstrations and court orders had previously held up work on the building for three months. Work had begun again only the day before the brawl erupted.
