Background: All police leave was cancelled in Johannesburg in case of trouble arising from demonstrations against the signing of race classification register under the new Nurses Act by Native nurses of Baragwanath Hospital. Thousands of native women marched on the hospital protesting against the need for nurses to provide identity numbers for training and for registration. If nurses were made to carry passes, said the spokeswoman, they - like all native woman workers, could be subject to arrest under pass laws; they would be exposed to humiliation and degradation when searched for passes and that they would lose the right to move from one place to another. Many of the demonstrators wore the green blouse and black skirt uniform of the African National Congress - the anti apartheid group that is rallying African Workers to unity and backing their actions with strike threats.
