Background: President Nixon welcomed Indian Prime Minister Mrs. India Gandhi to the White House on thursday (November 4), with full military ceremonial on the White House lawn.
Mrs. Gandhi stood side by side with Mr. Nixon to hear the National Anthems of both countries and review the Guard of Honour.
In her talks later with President Nixon, Mrs. Gandhi is understood to have made strong efforts to win support on India's confrontation with pakistan, and in dealing with the problem of nine million East Pakistan refugees now reported to be in India. But the official account of her meeting with the President indicated she had failed to narrow the differences with the President on the Pakistan question.
