Background: South African Prime Minister John Vorster arrived in Paris on Tuesday (June 11) at the start of a three-day visit during which he will meet French Prime Minister Jacques Chaban-Delmas.
Mr. Vorster travelled to Paris overnight by train from Madrid where he had met General Franco.
Immediately the train arrives from Madrid, Mr. Vorster was surrounded by French and South African security police. Strict security precautions were in force and most of the general public were cleared from the Austerlitz station. But there was no immediate sign of the threatened anti-apartheid demonstrations and Mr. Vorster's arrival attracted little attention from people meeting other passengers on the express train.
Mr. Vorster is due to meet M. Chaban-Delmas on Friday (June 12) afternoon. South African officials said the object of his tour was to discuss matters of mutual interest and to show that South Africa was not an isolated country.
Mr. Vorster leavers fro Geneva on Sunday (June 14).
