Background: THREE NEW WORLD RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED IN THE OPENING EVENTS OF THE TWO-DAY INTERNATIONAL SWIMMING CONTEST BETWEEN BRITAIN AND RUSSIA IN BLACKPOOL ON FRIDAY. AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY'S EVENTS RUSSIA WAS LEADING BY 60 POINTS TO 47.

IN THE 220 YARDS BUTTERFLY EVENT FOR MEN, RUSSIA SCORED THE FIRST TWO PLACES. V. KUSMIN, THE EUROPEAN CHAMPION SWAM STRONGLY INTO FIST PLACE, IN 2 MINUTES 13.2 SECONDS. SECOND WAS O. FOTIN. BRITAIN'S B. JENKINS SHARED THE LEAD FOR THE FIST 55-YARD LENGTH, BUT FELL BACK STEADILY AS HE FAILED TO KEEP UP WITH THE RUSSIANS.

THE FIRST WORLD RECORD FELL TO MISS J. NORFOLK IN THE 100 YARDS BACKSTROKE. THANKS TO SOME MAGNIFICENT SWIMMING IN MID-RACE, THE BRITISH GIRL WAS ABLE TO HOLD OFF A FAST SPRINT AT THE FINISH BY HER TEAM-MATE, MISS L. LUDGROVE, A FORMER WORLD RECORD HOLDER FOR THE DISTANCE. SHE RETURNED A TIME OF 1 MINUTE 9.8 SECONDS, TWO-TENTHS OF A SECOND FASTER THAN THE EXISTING RECORD. S. BABANINA OF RUSSIA WAS WELL BACK IN THIRD PLACE.

A BRITISH RECORD WAS ESTABLISHED IN ANOTHER OF THE WOMEN'S EVENTS, THE 440 YARDS FREESTYLE. MISS E.C. LONG WON THE EVEN FOR BRITAIN IN 4 MINUTES 50.7 SECONDS, AND LOWERED HER OWN RECORD TIME BY 1.4 SECS. SHE WAS ALL AHEAD OF N. MIKAILOVA OF RUSSIA WHO WAS SECOND, AND A. LONSBROUGH (U.K.) WHO WAS THIRD.

ANOTHER EVEN WHICH HELPED THE RUSSIANS TO ESTABLISH THEIR STRONG POINTS LEAD, WAS THE 110 YARDS FREESTYLE RACE FOR WOMEN. N. USTINOVA OF RUSSIA SWAM A CLOSELY FOUGHT RACE WITH BRITAIN'S K. KEEN. THE TWO GIRLS RECORDED THE SAME TIME OF 1 MINUTE 3.7 SECONDS, BUT THE DECISION WENT TO THE RUSSIAN GIRL. THIRD WAS D. WILKINSON OF BRITAIN.

THE OTHER WORLD RECORDS WERE ESTABLISHED IN 220 YARDS BREASTSTROKE FOR MEN, WITH 27 YEAR-OLD G. PROKOPENKO FINISHING IN 2 MINUTES 31.4 SECONDS; AN DIN THE 4 X 100 YARDS MEDLEY RELAY. IN THIS 2 EVENT THE RUSSIANS RETURNED A TIME OF 4 MINUTES 8 SECONDS.
