Background: Jordan and France said on Monday (10 March) that intensive efforts should be made to hold Middle East peace talks in which all parties, including the Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O.), should take part. A joint statement following French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing's talks in Jordan with King Hussein said the two leaders had agreed that the "delicate and serious situation in the region threatened world peace and security". The French President and his wife are on a ten-day tour of Arab States and left Jordan on Monday (10 March) for Saudi Arabia.

SYNOPSIS: The French President flew with King Hussein of Jordan and Prince Hassan to the northwest tip of Jordan on Sunday (9 March) for a panoramic view of the Middle East battlefields. From a military outpost the French leader could see the Upper Jordan Valley, held by the Israelis since 1948, and the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in 1967.

During his ten-day tour of the Mideast, Mr Giscard D'Estaing has repeatedly endorsed the rights of the Palestinians to self-determination. At a state banquet in Jordan's capital, Amman, on Saturday (8 March) he went a step further, proposing that the five major powers at the United Nations -- the Soviet Union, the United States, China, Britain and France -- give security guarantees for all the states in the region, including a Palestinian hole land, as part of a general peace settlement.

While the Mideast situation dominated the talks between King Hussein and the French President, separate talks were also held among senior officials on mutual economic, cultural and technical co-operation.
