    In France, celebrities from the world of cinema -- including stars and directors -- are arriving in the town of Cannes for the start of the annual film festival. Thirty thousand people, many of them critics and cinema fanatics are expected to attend the two week festival -- which opened with all the razz-matazz associated with the film industry on Thursday (10 May).

    SYNOPSIS: Outside the Palais des Festivals, hundreds of police were on duty -- just in case any fans became too enthusiastic at the sight of their screen idols.

    Among the first celebrities to arrive was French actor, Yves Montand, who escorted American actress, Lauren Bacall. Miss Bacall's career in films began in the 1940s with a cinema debut that introduced her to her future husband - the late Humphrey Bogart. She had a rapid rise to stardom, becoming famous for her portrayal of sultry, confident women.

    American film director Milos Forman arrived with the cast of the musical 'Hair' -- his latest work. The film was the first presentation of the festival, although it is not actually competing for the coveted awards. Twenty films from thirteen countries are competing for the Golden Palm award. But hundreds of films will be on show -- making the festival the largest celluloid showcase in the world.

    The President of the 1979 panel of judges -- the French author, Francoise Sagan. Miss Sagan won world fame with one of her first novels, 'Bonjour Tristesse'. Later she became a film director.
