Background: In Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday (8 October). seventy-five-thousand people turned out to see the 13th National '500' Stock car race.

It was one of the closest races for many years -- the winner, Bobby Allison, won by only one car length to pick up the first prize of more than 19,000 dollars(US).

In the final ten laps, the race developed into a two-way duel between Allison and Buddy Baker. The lead changed hands four times before Allison finally won.

SYNOPSIS: Seventy-five-thousand people line the track in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the start of the thirteenth annual National 'Five-hundred' stock car race. As expected there were plenty of anxious moments....
Another close shave, this time Harry Schultz ploughs across the grass infield, but he managed to regain control only after tearing away part of a fence near what's known as "Victory Lane".

The leader for most of the race, Bobby Allison in car number twelve. He was aiming for his ninth major triumph of the year....but it was not to be his without one of the closest tassels for years. Ten laps to go, and Allison and Buddy Baker are locked together.... Allison in number twelve. The lead changed hands four times in the last few laps and neither man was able to open up even a slight lead.

The last lap. And Allison wins by a car length as the unlucky Baker is trapped behind a slower car. For Allison, his ninth major win of the year and a cheque for nearly twenty-thousand dollars.
