Background: PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA HAS CALLED FOR THE USE OF FORCE TO END THE SMITH IN RHODESIA. HE ISSUED THE CALL YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN NAIROBI DURING CELEBRATIONS OF MAKADARA DAY WHICH MAKES THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF KENYA'S SELF-GOVERNMENT.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA SPOKE FROM A DAIS IN THE CITY CENTRE, WHERE HE TOOK THE SALUTE AT A MARCH-PAST BY 800 MEN OF THE KENYA ARMED FORCES. THERE WAS ALSO A DRIVE-PAST OF MECHANISED VEHICLE AND A FLYPAST BY KENYA AIR FORCE PLANES.

HE SAID: "IT WOULD BE WRONG TO PRETEND WE IN AFRICA ARE NOT BITTERLY DISAPPOINTED AT THE WAY THE REBELLION HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO LINGER ON. THE RESPONSIBILITY IS ENTIRELY THAT OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT... I KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF MY COLLEAGUES IN THE COMMONWEALTH AGREE VERY STRONGLY WITH MY VIEW THAT THE PRESENT SITUATION IN RHODESIA REDUCES THE WHOLE IDEA OF THE COMMONWEALTH TO A HOLLOW MOCKERY." COMPULSION AND FORCE SHOULD BE USED, HE ADDED.

KENYA ACHIEVED FULL INDEPENDENCE IN DECEMBER 1963.
