    VICE-PRESIDENT: "I spoke also to the President, M. Giscard d'Estaing, about the real problems of the Middle East."



    QUESTION: "Do you think we are moving any closer towards a peaceful settlement?"



    VICE-PRESIDENT: "We are doing of our best to move the peace process."



    QUESTION: "So is there an option for Egypt at Geneva or step by step?"



    VICE-PRESIDENT: "They're all open."



    QUESTION: "And does Egypt still suggest the enlargement of the Geneva conference?"



    VICE-PRESIDENT: "Yes."



    QUESTION: "What would be the role in that conference of France?"



    VICE-PRESIDENT: "France, as one of the big countries, it may help to strengthen the Geneva conference."



    QUESTION: "At what stage would that be, sir?"



    VICE-PRESIDENT: "After we have no difference, yes."

    Background: Peace prospects in the Middle East were under review in Paris today (9 June) when the Egyptian Vice-President, Air Marshal Hosni Mubarak, called on French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing for discussions.

    The Egyptian leader is on a five-day visit, and right from the start of it he announced: "Egypt is looking for peace and we are doing everything for this end." But he has also stressed that the next stop must come from Israel.
