Background: SOUTH VIETNAM'S GOVERNMENT IS SENDING MORE TROOPS TO MEET THE GROWING STRENGTH OF VIETCONG FORCES ALONG THE LAOTIAN BORDER. THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCE IS STATIONED AT KHE SANH, ABOUT 10 MILES FROM THE BORDER. THEY ARE WORKING WITH SOUTH VIETNAMESE, AMERICAN AND AUSTRALIAN MILITARY ADVISERS.

WITH CONSTANT VIGILANCE BY THE SPECIAL FORCE -- SHOWN ON RECENT FILM -- SCATTERED GROUPS OF VIETCONG IN THE AREA ARE KEPT ON THE MOVE AND ARE NOT GIVEN A CHANCE TO REGROUP. RECENT REPORTS SAY THERE HAS BEEN A BUILD-UP OF VIETCONG AND PRO-COMMUNIST PATHET LAO FORCES JUST ACROSS THE BORDER FROM KHE SANH.

AT ANOTHER GOVERNMENT OUTPOST IN A RO, ABOUT FIVE MILES FROM THE BORDER, MEN OF THE SPECIAL FORCE ARE WAGING A DAILY BATTLE AGAINST VIETCONG UNITS. HELICOPTERS TOUCH DOWN ONLY FOR A FEW SECONDS TO UNLOAD FOOD RATIONS AND AMMUNITION. THE AREA IS SAID TO BE VIETCONG TERRITORY.

DESPITE CONSTANT VIETCONG ACTIVITY AN AIRSTRIP IS BEING LEVELLED IN A RO BY AUSTRALIAN WARRANT-OFFICER REGINALD COLLINSON. A BULLDOZER WAS DROPPED TO HIM FROM THE AIR SOME WEEKS AGO BUT AN ERROR WAS MADE AND THE MACHINE LANDED ABOUT 100 YARDS OFF THE END OF A HILL IN THICK JUNGLE.

A VIETCONG UNIT REACHED THE MACHINE FIRST BUT WAS DRIVEN OFF BY THE SPECIAL FORCE. WARRANT OFFICER COLLINSON SPENT SOME HOUR EXTRICATING THE MACHINE FROM THE JUNGLE AND HE CAME UNDER HEAVY FIRE FROM OTHER VIETCONG UNITS.

THE SPECIAL FORCE IN THIS AREA IS IN A VERY DEFENSIVE POSITION. SENTRIES ARE ON GUARD AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE AREA TO DRIVE OFF THE VIETCONG, SOME OF WHOM COME AS NEAR AS 150 YARDS.

MEANWHILE, THE UNITED STATES IS TO INCREASE ITS SUPPORT IN SOUTH VIETNAM WITH HELICOPTERS, TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT, SIGNALS TECHNICIANS AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL. AT PRESENT, THERE ARE MORE THAN 16,000 AMERICANS IN THE COUNTRY SERVING AS MILITARY ADVISERS, AS TRAINING PERSONNEL FOR LOCAL FORCES AND AS COMBAT ADVISERS IN ACTION AGAINST THE VIETCONG.
