Background: MARIELLE GOITSCHEL, OF FRANCE YESTERDAY, (TUESDAY), WON THE BLUE-RIBBON SLALOM EVENT AT THE 26TH WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL
SKI RACES IN GRINDELWALD, SWITZERLAND. TWO AUSTRIAN GIRLS, TRAUDL HECHER AND CHRISTL HAAS WERE SECOND AND THIRD.

SKIING CONDITIONS WERE BAD THROUGH LACK OF SNOW, AND THE THIN COVERING WAS HARD AND FROZEN. THERE WERE MANY FALLS DURING THE EVENT AND A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPETITORS WERE DISQUALIFIED FOR MISSING A GATE OR GAVE UP THE RACE.

THE RACE WAS RUN OVER TWO COURSES BOTH OF WHICH WERE LAID OUT IN THE SHADOW OF THE FAMOUS NORTH WALL OF THE EIGER MOUNTAIN. THE FIRST HAD 49 GATES AND THE SECOND 52 GATES.

MARIELLE GOITSCHELL SHOWED COMPLETE MASTERY OVER THE FIELD OF 67 COMPETITORS AND FINISHED HER FINAL RUN IN 1 MINUTE 51.02 SECONDS. TRAUDL HECHER'S TIME WAS 1 MINUTE 54.99 SECONDS WHILE CHRISTL HAAS WAS TIMED AS 1 MINUTE 55.40 SECONDS.

A SENSATION FOLLOWED THE RACE WHEN JEAN SAUBERT OF AMERICA WAS PLACED SECOND IN AN UNOFFICIAL LIST, BUT WAS LATER DISQUALIFIED FOR MISSING A GATE.
