Background: World champion motor-cyclist John Surtess won the 500 c.c. event in the French Grand Prix, May 22, riding an M.V. Agusta. He covered the 125 mile course in 1 hour 30 minutes 21 seconds, at an average speed of 75 m.p.h. Italy's Remo Venturi third on a Norton.
The victory was some compensation to Surtess, who was surprisingly beaten into third place in the 350 c.c. race by Gary Hocking of Rhodesia on an Agusta and Frantisek Stastny of Czechoslovakia on a Jarwa; defeat was attributed to a twelfth lap plug change which lost him two minutes; he finished 1 minute 34 seconds behind the winner.
