Background: THOUSANDS OF POLICE REINFORCEMENTS MOVED INTO PARIS WHILE TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS TOOK UP STATION AT KEY POINTS AROUND THE CITY, FEBRUARY 3, AMID A FLURRY OF RUMOURS AND SPECULATION OF AN ATTEMPTED COUP BY THE FRENCH RIGHT-WING SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION (OAS).

POLICE FEARED THE OAS WOULD ATTEMPT TO SEIZE POWER BEFORE THE FOLLOWING MONDAY WHEN PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WAS DUE TO MAKE HIS POLICY SPEECH BROADCAST ON THE FUTURE OF ALGERIA. THEY BELIEVED KILLERS SMUGGLED IN FROM ALGERIA MIGHT STRIKE AT PROMINENT INDIVIDUALS.

AS THE SECURITY FORCES ROLLED INTO THE CITY, RUMOURS AND COUNTER-REPORTS FLASHED AROUND THE COUNTRY. ONE SAID THE OAS HAD THE SUPPORT OF 99 PER CENT OF THE PARATROOPERS STATIONED IN THE AREA; ANOTHER THAT IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK THE ORGANISATION WAS STAKING EVERYTHING ON A "DO OR DIE" BID TO WREST POWER FROM THE GOVERNMENT.

EARLY IN THE DAY THERE WAS ONE PLASTIC BOMB EXPLOSION IN PARIS, AT THE HOME OF A SENATOR WHO WAS AWAY AT THE TIME. DURING THE NIGHT BEFORE, POLICE STAGED THE BIGGEST EVER SECURITY CHECK, STOPPING 15,000 VEHICLES.

AND PRESIDENT DE GAULLE? HE WAS AWAY FROM IT ALL, WORKING ON HIS SPEECH AT HIS HOME AT COLOMBEY, 100 MILES EAST OF PARIS.
