Background: Rival bands of students fought for three hours outside Athens University yesterday (Tuesday) after a group of pro-government students attacked demonstrators who were demanding the resignation of the new radical Greek Government.

Police, who intervened to stop the fighting, said seven students were injured, two seriously. Nine people were arrested but five of them were later released.

A spokesman for the United Democratic Left Party said two of its deputies were beaten up by pro-government students when they tried to join the demonstrators. The demonstrators, belonging to the pro-Communist National Students Union, described the new cabinet of Professor Panayotis Kanellopoulos as "royal palace cooking".

The new prime minister, appointed by King Constantine, is expected to seek a vote of confidence in Parliament next week.

During the demonstrations right-wing factions burnt Lord Russell flags -- the symbol of the marathon peace march by the Lambrakis youth movement.
