    JOHNSTON: "The circumstances were quite good. Physically I was well treated. They gave me vegetables, bread, meat, and fish...that's all.



    REPORTER: Were you allowed to...were you required to sign documents for your release? If so, could you describe what kind of documents you might have signed?



    JOHNSTON: Yes, I did sign a letter of confession.



    REPORTER: Such as what?



    JOHNSTON: Yes, that I had...really what it amounted to ...that I had offended against the laws of the great People's Republic of China."

    Background: British banker David Johnston crossed from the People's Republic of China into Hongkong on Friday (December 25th) after spending more than two years in a Shanghai jail. He was reunited withe his wife who had flown from Britain the night before.

    At the Lo Wu rail-bridge border point, Mr Johnston was escorted into Hongkong by an army officer and police. He seemed well, but under some strain. His first words when reunited with his wife, were "Isn't it marvellous to be back at Christmas?"
    At the time of his arrest, in August 1968, Mr Johnston was managing the Shanghai Branch of the Chartered Bank. He was accused of being an enemy of the People's Republic, but never formally charged. After his release, Mr Johnston was questioned:
