    Background: Proudly wearing medals unknown to the younger generation, 31 elderly men gathered almost unnoticed in the crowded heart of Durban, South Africa, March 1, to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the raising of the historic 120-day siege of Ladysmith.

    Holding their shoulders back, and heads erect, the veterans gathered around the South African War Memorial in the City Gardens as they Mayor laid a wreath on their behalf.

    Community singing at the annual tea later was led by Perla Siedle Gibson, who was well known during the World War II as the 'Lady in White', as she sang to British and Allied troop ships as they passed on their way through Durban.
