Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt arrived in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Thursday (24 May) to attend the 10th anniversary conference of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). He was met at the airport by Emperor Haile Selassie.
While in Addis Ababa, President Sadat will try to rally African support for the Arab cause against Israel in advance of next month's important United Nation's Security Council debate on the Middle East.
Reuters also reports that President Sadat might also take the opportunity to meet with President Jaafar Nimeiry of Sudan, who is attending the conference. The two leaders have not met since relations between their countries deteriorated last year.
SYNOPSIS: On arriving to attend his first Organisation of African Unity conference, the Egyptian leader declared that the occupation of Egyptian territory by Israel in the north and the continued "racist domination" of African territory in the south were part of an international imperialist plot, aimed at preventing African from developing its resource.
He also declared: "The soil of Egypt is the soil of Africa" and that "Egypt's freedom is the freedom of Africa."
