Background: Five thousand students marched through central Rome streets on Saturday (6 November) in an anti-fascism demonstration which had the side effect of snarling up traffic over much of the city. The young demonstrators were organised by anti-fascist centres in 10 Rome secondary schools, and made their way chanting such slogans as "fascism will not pass" until they reached the Education Ministry. After the students had converged on the building, city traffic remained hopelessly jammed for several hours. Later reports indicated that a counter demonstration by right-wing youths had resulted in running scuffles with the police.
