    Background: JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass, driving a Porsche 956 won the South African nine-hour endurance race at the Kyalami track in Johannesburg on November 6. Porsche cars took the first three places with Derek Bell and Vern Schuppan coming second and Bob Wollek and Georgio Francia third in their Porsche 936C. Ickx, who has won the famous Le Mans twenty-four-hour race six times, completed 379 laps of the track. He and his co-driver the West German international, Jochen Mass finished one lap ahead of Britains' Derek Bell who was driving with Australian Vern Schuppan. France's Bob Wollek and Georgio Francia in third place were eighteen laps behind the two lead cars at the finish. A large crowd turned out to watch the nine-hour endurance. The win concluded a memorable season for Jacky Ickx who finished as world champion after his win at Brands Hatch (UK) in October.
