    THE CHALLENGE TROPHY WAS WON BY THE WORLD EPEE CHAMPION OF 1958, ENGLISH FRUIT FARMER, BILL HOSKYNS. IN A VIGOROUS FINAL HE DEFEATED THE TALL (6FT.7IN.) FRENCH EPEE AND OLYMPIC CHAMPION, GERARD LEFRANCE, 20 - 8. EARLIER, LEFRANCE BEAT HIS FRENCH TEAM-MATE D. DEGALLIER, 9-7.

    JACK GUITTET OF FRANCE, 1961 CHAMPION, WAS ELIMINATED IN A QUARTER FINAL BOUT BY A.CHIARI OF ITALY, WHO WON 8-5.

    INAUGURATED IN 1960, THE MARTINI INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT IS CONSIDERED THE LEADING WORLD EPEE COMPETITION OUTSIDE THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES. THE PRIZES WERE PRESENTED BY MR.CHARLES FORTE, A KEEN SUPPORTER OF THE BRITISH AMATEUR FENCING ASSOCIATION. A PERPETUAL CHALLENGE TROPHY, THE CUP IS HELD BY THE WINNER FOR ONE YEAR.

    THE COMPETITION WAS JUDGED WITH ELECTRICAL APPARATUS WHICH AUTOMATICALLY SIGNALLED HITS WITH A LIGHT AND BELL. WITH THE EPEE, OR DUELLING SWORD, HITS CAN BE SCORED WITH THE POINT ONLY ON ANY PART OF THE FENCER OF HIS EQUIPMENT.
