Background: Don Juan Carlos de Bourbon, heir to the Spanish throne, and his wife Princess Sophia, arrived in Addis Ababa on Thursday (4 May) at the start of a three-day state visit to the Ethiopian capital. The couple were greeted at the airport by Emperor Haile Selassie and with him was the Ethiopian Crown Prince, Merid Azmatch Asfa Wossen.
Later, the Emperor decorated the Spanish Prince and Princess at a state banquet and reception at the Jubiles Palace.
On Friday (5 May), the Prince and Princess took part in ceremonies marking Victory Day, which honours the triumphal return of Emperor Hails Selassie to Addis Ababa following the defeat of the Italian Army by the British in 1941. The Prince laid a wreath at the Victory Monument in Miazia 27 Square, in the city centre.
On Saturday (6 May), the last day of the state visit, Don Juan and his wife were to visit Africa hall, headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, before lunching with the Ethiopian Crown Prince. And that evening, the royal visitors were scheduled to give a banquet for the Emperor and other members of the Royal family at the Spanish Embassy.
On Sunday (7 May) Don Juan was to leave for south-eastern Ethiopia on a private hunting trip, while the Princess will visit a number of the country's historic places.
The royal couple are due to leave for Spain on Wednesday (10 May).
