Background: A highlight of the 21st African regional session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) was the presentation of an important new mural by the Ugandan government. In a series of paintings, the mural retraces the development of medicine in East Africa from pre-colonial times up to the present day. At the WHO headquarters in Brazzaville, the Ugandan Health Minister, Dr. J.H. Gesa handed over the work to the organisation's Regional Director, Dr. Alfred Quanum. The artist, Ignatius Selulyo, was also on hand to explain his creation.

SYNOPSIS: At Brazzaville, a fine new mural decorates the regional headquarters of the World Health Organisation.

Starting with the practice of traditional medicine, the mural traces the development of medicine in East Africa
Here, the first white explorers are depicted treating natives. The sequence traces the early missionary end colonial services, through the today's African operated health service. The painting was welcomed for its depiction of the great strides in medicine made in Africa during the past century.
