Background: Nearly 13,000 spectators packed New York's Madison Square Garden, June 17, to watch the opening of the British Military Tournament and Tattoo. Americans gave a great reception to the 532 members of the British Armed Forces who took part in the display. 48 United States servicemen formed a colour guard at the opening ceremony as the Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines played the National Anthems of both countries.

A big impression was made on the crowds by the colourful uniforms and music of the massed pipes and drums of the Scots Guards, the Seaforth Highlanders, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Queen's own Cameroon Highlanders.

The Royal Air Force Regiment and the Household Brigade gave a precession drill display which was well received. Following this the Royal Marches performed a drill dating back to 1805 complete with the uniforms and drill instructions of that era.

Royal Marine commandos on an assault course, a Royal Air Force gymnastic display and Highland dancing were followed by a grand finale in which all took part. The show is expected to play to crowded houses until the final performance on July 4.
