Background: Palestine Liberation Organisation spokesmen on Thursday (5 June) showed reporters Israeli arms and ammunition they claimed had been found on the Tyre shore in South Lebanon.
Tyre is a coastal town about 40 miles from the Israeli border, well beyond the scope of recent Israeli raids on border villages inside Lebanon.
The ammunition included a wide range of mortar bombs and rockets.
SYNOPSIS: In Beirut, the Palestine Liberation Organisation today claimed it had found a large quantity of Israeli arms and ammunition on the sea shore near Tyre in South Lebanon. PLO spokesman invited reporters to inspect their discovery.
Tyre is a coastal town about forty miles from the Israeli border.
Israeli troops have crossed the border into Lebanon at least three times this year - most recently two weeks ago. They came across a group of Lebanese soldiers, and a pitched battle followed. The Israelis say the raids are directed at suspected terrorists. But the targets were always villages within a few miles of the border. But Tyre is outside the usual range of these raids.
