Background: Large crowds gathered outside St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, on Easter Sunday, Apr 17, to take part in the annual Easter fashion parade. Fantastic hat creation were to be seen everywhere on elegantly dressed women, as the crowd - thousands strong - waited for the congregation to emerge from Mass.
Cardinal Spellman, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, preached the sermon at the Mass while, outside, a massed guard of white-gloved policemen, mostly Irish, struggled to stop and control the crowds who in turn had stopped the traffic.
Many cameras were in operation as hats resembling chimney pots, outsize mushrooms, trilbies, helmets and some with large flowers growing from the top, plunged over noses as women jostled for position. The men - mainly hatless - were endeavouring to see just as much of the fun as the ladies.
