Background: Australia's national capital, Canberra, was the latest target in a spate of bombings in the past fortnight.
An explosion at Parliament House caused minor damage to an awning and the front steps of the building: another bomb wrecked a power transformer near the Federal Defence Department.
Later police arrested a man near the Royal Military College at ???. They are questioning him about the Canberra bombings and also hope he can provide information on a series of blasts in Sydney a week ago.
The bombing at Parliament House came after an unsuccessful attempt had been made to enter the building through a rear door.
The second blast blew pieces of the power transformer over a wide area.
In two other incidents the front doors of the Treasury Building and the British High Commission were broken. Police were put on guard and others searched bushland areas. Roadblocks were set up and a helicopter was used to assist the searchers.
