Background: President Aparicio Mendez of Uruguay arrived in Brasilia on an official visit to Brazil on Wednesday (6 July).
SYNOPSIS: The Uruguayan President was met at a military air base in Brasilia by Brazil's president ??? Geisel. The visit was part of a recent intensification of movement by South American Presidents during which a number of bilateral agreements were signed. Only a few days earlier Argentine President, General Jorge Rafael Videla, paid a three day official visit to Uruguay.
On the afternoon of his arrival in Brasilia, President Mendez held official talks with the Brazilian President at the Planal to Palace where the presidential officer are housed. They later posed with their Chancellors for photographers.
During the visit, the two Presidents signed a pledge of friendship, after which they exchanged gifts. President Mendez received a signed photograph and a pair of stirrups from the Brazilian President. He in turn gave President Geisel a signed photograph and some cigars in a silver box inscribed with the Brazilian President's initials.
