Background: The Irish Republic started negotiations in Brussels today (21 Sept) in its attempt to enter the European Economic Community.
The Foreign Minister of Eire, Patrick Hillery, was reported to have made clear to representatives of the six-man community that his country was concerned with preserving its vital interests. He said that Eire accepted the founding Treaty of Rome and outlined ten points covering Irish agricultural and industrial policy that his delegation would like to discuss with the community.
After the six-hour session, French Foreign Minister, Maurice Schumann told reporters "The Irish position is close to that of the community. I anticipate no difficulties."
