Background: The South Vietnamese army continues its offensive operations all over the country in an effort to keep the military initiative. fifteen thousand men of crack Ranger units have launched a new drive in the Central highlands, close to the Laos, which is intended to keep the Communists off-balance.
Troops boarding trucks; trucks leaving for countryside; helicopter takes off; officers plan operations; troops patrol village; offensive moves off through bamboo into high grassland.
This is the largest concentration of troops in South Vietnam since the Laos operation last year. The Rangers are trying to make contact with units of the 320th North Vietnamese Division, knick-named the 'Iron Troops.' Intelligence reports reveal that this elite division recently arrived in the area from the northern provinces bordering the Demilitarized Zone. So far there has been little contacts with the Communists, despite aggressive patrolling by the Vietnamese Government forces.
