Background: The crucial matches to decide the final team placings in the World Table Tennis Championships began in Calcutta,on Sunday (9 February).
The Chinese proved the overall masters taking both the Swaythling Cup for men and the Corbillon Cup for women ... but not before some heart stopping moments.
After the team's events the players play-off to decide the world men and women's champions.
Sunday began with China, Sweden... the holders of the man's trophy... Czechoslovaks and Yugoslavia all in the running. In the final China beat Yugoslavia 5-3.
Sweden won a marathon battle against Czechoslovakia to take fourth place.
In the women's team playoffs, China beat South Korea 3-2. Japan were third and Hungary fourth. The double win to China repeated their similar clean sweep at the world championships in 1965.
