Background: ... continued throughout the hurricane warning area all night here in New Orleans, but in most places along the Gulf Coast they did little good.

Tides as much as 20 feet above normal sent water pounding in over sea walls. Camille's winds were clocked at over 150 m.p.h. as she slammed into ... Mississippi, breaking windows, carrying down power lines, and flooding streets and buildings with rain so heavy that they were described as filling the air with water, leaving no room for breathing. Water was reported 15 - 20 feet deep in some parts of ..., and reports are that no building in town escaped damaged.

New Orleans escaped damage from the storm itself, but early this morning a levy along the canal broke, and hundreds of residents were evacuated by police boats and amphibious vehicles. There have been no reports of casualties in the area hit by Camille, but not until later this morning will the extent of the storm's fury be known.

A Louisiana congressman, ... says President Nixon has declared the Gulf coast a disaster area, making it eligible for immediate massive federal aid.

And the ... can now, by her trip across land, the tornado danger still exists on the fringes of the storm, and an alert exists across much of Mississippi.
