  • Description

QUESTION: "HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT GOING TO ENGLAND?"

ANSWER: "I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO IT VERY MUCH, BOTH FOR THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE AND ALSO FOR THE CHANCE TO TRAVEL SINCE I HAVE NEVER BEEN OUT OF THE COUNTRY BEFORE."

QUESTION: "DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LEARN MORE THERE THAN YOU HAVE IN THE UNITED STATES?"

ANSWER: "WELL, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE TUTORIAL SYSTEM. I THINK IT HAS A LOT OF ADVANTAGES OVER OUR SYSTEM."

QUESTION: "WOULD YOU INCLUDE ACADEMIC FREEDOM IN THAT?"

ANSWER: I THINK SO BECAUSE WHAT YOU DO IS ENTIRELY DEPENDENT UPON YOUR OWN INITIATIVE. YOU HAVE A PRECEPTOR WHO GIVES YOU A GENERAL COURSE OF STUDIES TO FOLLOW BUT YOU HAVE NO DEFINITE OBLIGATIONS AS FAR AS CLASS TIME. YOU ARE ALL ON YOUR OWN."

QUESTION: "JOHN, THE LAST NEGRO STUDENT TO WIN THIS SCHOLARSHIP, I THINK, WAS IN 1907. HOW DO YOU THINK THE FACT THAT YOU ARE A NEGRO WILL AFFECT YOU AND YOUR COURSE OF STUDY WHILE YOU ARE IN ENGLAND?"

ANSWER: "WELL, I DON'T EXPECT IT TO HAVE ANY DEFINITE EFFECTS. OF COURSE, I AM ALWAYS CONSCIOUS OF THE FACT, BUT I DON'T SEE HOW IT AFFECTS PERFORMANCE AT ALL."

SANDERS: "IT'S QUITE AN HONOUR TO THE RACE. I THINK IT'S INDICATIVE OF THE FACT THAT THE NEGRO RACE NOW IS RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF GRADUATE EDUCATION. I THINK IT'S INDICATIVE OF THE FACT THAT NEGROES ARE BREAKING DOWN THE STEREOTYPE OF BEING ATHLETES ONLY IN THAT THEY CAN COMBINE SCHOLARSHIP WITH ATHLETICS AND LEADERSHIP. I THINK IT'S A TREMENDOUS HONOUR, AND I THINK THAT WITH THAT HONOUR AND WITH THIS PRIVILEGE COMES QUITE A BIT OF RESPONSIBILITY, NOT ONLY TO OTHER RHODES SCHOLARS IN THE TRADITION OF RHODES SCHOLARSHIP IN THE UNITED STATES BUT TO THE NEGRO RACE."
