Background: Leeds United beat Dynamo Dresden 1 - 0 in Leeds in the first leg of their second round European Fairs Cup match tonight (21 October). It was not until the 55th minute that Leeds could pierce that tough East German defence. A header by Belfitt was handled on the line by left back Dorner, and Peter Lorimer confidently slammed home the penalty.
Playing without such stars as Sprake, Reaney, Giles and Gray, the Leeds team had difficulty in translating their midfield superiority into goals.
The tough and disciplined Dynamo team played mainly a defensive game, and their tall defenders controlled the air. But several sudden and penetrating attacks were a warning to Leeds that they may be hard pressed to hang on to their single-goal advantage in the second leg in Dresden on November 4th.
