Background: Following his overwhelming reception in India, President Eisenhower had a more restful day December 12, attending only two official functions --- the first an "At Home" given by President Rajendra Prasad at his palace in Delhi.

Accompanied by his son, Major John Eisenhower, and daughter-in-law, Barbara, the President mingled with some 5,000 guests in the palace gardens, taking time off for a quiet cup of tea. Major Eisenhower and his wife - who is acting as "hostess" on the President's tour - took a short ride on President Prasad's pet elephant, 'Jumbo'. Before climbing on the elephant's back, the couple were garlanded with flowers -- by 'Jumbo' himself.

The following day, December 15, -- the President's last full day in India -- some 500,000 people flocked to Ramlila grounds to hear him speak on "peace and freedom". India and America he said, as two peaceful nations, believed there were greater things in the world even than peace. "They are ideals, the hopes, the aspirations of humanity, our loyalty to conscience." Only in freedom could there be true peace and friendship. "We believe that freedom ultimately will be won everywhere."
On December 14, President Eisenhower flew to Teheran for luncheon with the Shah of Persia, and later in the day to Athens, for a welcome by the King of Hellenes.
