Background: MOUNT SHIRANE, GUMMA PREFECTURE, JAPAN

Japan's Mount Shirane volcano erupted on December 29, sending columns of smoke billowing 300 metres (328 yards) into the air and blanketing the surrounding areas of the Gumma prefecture. The mountain is a popular ski resort in winter, but there were no skiers in the region at the time of the eruption. The blast caused no significant damage or casualties. The 2162 metre (2363 yards) Mount Shirane last erupted on October 26 but that too caused little damage. Seismologists had predicted the most recent eruption.
