Background: As he faced a major political crisis over Czechoslovak arms, Archbishop Makarios, the President of Cyprua, called a meeting in Nicosia of the Holy Synod of Bishops yesterday (Thursday, March 2) to discuss the situation--and found himself with an even graver national and personal problem. Three of the Bishops (from Paphos, Kitium and Kyrenia) demanded that the President resign from office on the grounds that an Archbishop is forbidden by Orthodox Church law from holding temporal power.

The initial crisis arose with it was reported that the Greek Government had asked President Makarios to reshuffle his Cabinet and hand over alleged shipments of Czechoslovak arms to the United Nations peace-keeping forces on the island. With no official confirmation or denial available on the subject, a Cypriot Government spokesman was quoted as saying that the arms question "was well on the way towards settlement".

Today (Friday), as President Makarios called an emergency meeting of his Cabinet, saying he would resign unless the Bishops withdrew their demand--church bells have been pealing throughout the country in support of the Archbishop, and right-wing trades unions and other groups have called for a mass rally outside the Archbishopric.
