Background: Eliot Teltscher of the United States and Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia were among the seeded players to advance to the second round of the 300,000 dollar Seiko World Super Tennis tournament in Tokyo on Tuesday (28 October). Top seed Bjorn Borg also won through with a straight sets victory over Japan's Tsuyoshi Fukui.

SYNOPSIS: The six-day tournament is taking place in tokyo's Yoyogi National Stadium.

In an all-American clash, fifth-seeded Teltscher faced Mel Purcell, and lost the first set 2-6 after dropping his service for the second time.

Earlier this year Teltscher, who's twenty-one was a quarter-finalist in the Italian Open and West German Championships, and, last year, reached the semi-finals at five Grand Prix events. His speed on court and accurate ground strokes made him runner-up in the japan and Asian Open Title in Tokyo earlier this month.

Purcell turned professional only four months ago, and was runner-up in the United States Open Clay Court Championship and in the U.S. Open, scored a victory over veteran player Stan Smith. But Teltscher's greater experience proved decisive here. From one set down he broke Purcell's serve in the second and third sets to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Puerto Rican Francisco Gonzales is seen here serving in the second set of his match against Ivan Lendl. A tough opponent on a fast court, Gonzales uses the court very effectively. But he shines more as a doubles than as a singles player.

Lendl, seeded third, is having a splendid season. He captured this year's Japan and Asian Open title, and recently beat Bjorn Borg in the finals of the Swiss Indoor Championships.

The rising young Czechoslovak had few problems, beating Gonzales 6-3, 7-6. Lendl moved on to meet Britain's Buster Mottram in the second round.
