Background: The Spanish Sahara has been the subject of much diplomatic activity in the past few weeks. On Tuesday (10 June) United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim met King Hassan the Second of Morocco to discuss the problem.
Spain has indicated it is ready to grant the colony independence but the issue is complicated by rival claims to the territory from both Morocco and Mauritania.
Mr. Waldheim has described his visit as fact-finding. He told newsmen in Rabat his object was to find out the positions of Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco and Spain. He added he did not intend to undertake any action for the moment.
After his talks with King Hassan and other Moroccan leaders, Mr. Waldheim flew to Spain for three more days of talks on the colony's future.
