Herr Fischer had flown to Addis Ababa from the Malagasy Republic where he had reaffirmed his country's belief in the liberation of the peoples of southern Africa with the Malagasy President Didier Ratsiraka. Ethiopian Foreign Minister Kifle Wodajo met Herr Fischer at the airport. The main purpose of the visit was to sign agreements worked out by an East German trade delegation which visited Ethiopia the previous week.
The cultural and commercial agreements Mr. Fischer came to sign will set out general principles of cooperation rather than precise details, but they will strengthen the ties between the two countries which are already quite close.
Herr Fischer made this brief statement in German at the airport. The following day he had talks with the Ethiopian Foreign Minister and other government officials and the working session with the Organisation of African Unity officials, at which Dr. Onu asked Herr Fischer for more arms, saying, "We would like the fascists to know that we have guns behind their backs to ensure they give up what they've taken by force."
At the airport Herr Fischer's interpreter told the Ethiopians how glad the Foreign Minister was to be in their country.
