Background: Israeli troops on Sunday (3 February) completed the evacuation of the tiny West Bank settlement of elon Moreh. A small group of ultra-nationalist Israelis had been refusing to evacuate the controversial camp, in defiance of a government order to leave.

SYNOPSIS: Most of the settlers left Elon Moreh peacefully in late January, bound for a new camp site some miles (kilome??? away. But four families and ten individuals refused to budge.

These people are members of the ???ealous Gush Emunim (Faith Bloc), who are demanding massive Jewish settlement on the West Bank. They also tried to interfere with the transfer of those who agreed to leave earlier. But their time ran out on Sunday when the voluntary government eviction order expired. The only delay was caused by a circumcision ceremony for a son born to one of the hold-out families.

Then the clearance gangs moved in, backed up by israeli troops.

Nevertheless, the settlers of Elon Moreh were not about to give in without a struggle. They reject the concept that the land on which their town was built now has reverted to Arab ownership, as part of the peace settlement terms and gradual Israeli withdrawal from occupied territory.

The struggle began at dusk and lasted several hours into the night, as soldiers obeyed orders to clear the area by force. Hardline residents, joined by members of the Kach ultra-nationalist movement, clambered on to the bulldozers and cranes which had been sent to haul away the ten caravans still standing at Elon Moreh. Woman soldiers literally manhandled the female dissidents.

One hysterical woman shrieked at the soldiers, demanding that they tear down Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat's home, rather than her own.

The protesters fear that the resettlement town they're bound for, on the outskirts of Nablus, could be equally at risk, simply with the stroke of a pen in Tel Aviv. But the Israeli Government has assured the Gush Emunim that Elon Moreh and its evacuation has not set a precedent.
